The Practice

To survive since 1946 in the choppy waters of the building industry does show a fair level of commitment as a practice. Enthusiasm as a personal trait is an important measure of our employment policy as is a willingness to give as much attention as is necessary to achieve a high standard.

The practice is shared by Robin Dower and Tina Gough and employs four architectural staff supported by our Practice Manager. By retaining a small workforce we feel better placed to maintain the high quality of work our clients have come to expect of us. Able to work independently, or collectively as a team, we are well equipped to tackle a wide range of projects.

Meet the team

Spence & Dower

Though I started my working life in London my family roots are here in the North-East – ‘this corner of the earth has a smile for me above all other places.’ Returning to join the practice in 1974, I have tried to develop an understanding of the region’s traditional built environment, particularly of it’s rural communities as a context for a contemporary design response. Repeated commissions and recommendation seem to suggest a reputation for continuing quality output.
