Wooler Community Centre
The unusual cruciform plan of this Poor House in a Northumberland Market Town was ideal for conversion into a flourishing, popular and vital community facility. An enclosed courtyard was roofed over to provide an airy entrance area and playroom accommodation extends into one of the rear courtyards providing a safe environment for young children. This was partially roofed over with some of the first photovoltaic panels to arrive in Northumberland, allowing light through whilst offering some weather protection during outdoor play. Several years on, the equipment which monitors the amount of electricity being generated is still being used as an educational tool. The extent of community participation, commitment and tenacity in fund raising demonstrated during this project was impressive!
