Felton Park Glasshouse Northumberland

‘Heritage at Risk : The Long Game’ was the title of our lecture for the Durham World Heritage Site series. We are certainly a practice with tenacity bordering on stubbornness!

Almost 20 years after our first contact with the Felton Park Glasshouse project, and three owners on, it has finally been removed from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.

Our work has been recognised in the national prestigious Georgian Group/Savills Architectural Awards for 2015. The work received a commendation in the garden and garden building restoration section. The citation stated “It is one of the earliest surviving buildings to use slender, curved wrought iron glazing bars and fish scale glass, an innovative design technique pioneered by John Claudius Loudon, the great garden designer and hothouse expert. So it is an important building but also a fragile one that could easily have fallen into an irreversible spiral of decline …… an exemplary restoration, with meticulous cleaning and repair of the multitude of panes, wrought iron glazing bars and internal iron furniture such as window hooks, vine wires and ventilator flaps. Such painstaking work requires commitment, patience and attention to detail, all of which are evident here in the deeply impressive results.”
The project was supported by Historic England, The Heritage Lottery Fund, The Country Houses Foundation and Northumberland County Council.

It has also won a Highly Commended in the NE Constructing Excellence Awards 2016 and the project received a certificate of commendation at the Historic England Angel Awards 2016. Historic England included the work as a major article in their Heritage at Risk North East Summary 2016.
