Clifford's Fort, North Shields

The full extent of the 1672 (Second Dutch War) Fort has only become clear in the last four years with the demolition of many redundant fish processing buildings covering the site from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Magnificent masonry forms a long low wall with 29 heavy gun emplacements facing the mouth of the Tyne. A moat and counterscarp wall have been cleared out and full repointing and consolidation completed.
