Castle Keep, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
The 1970’s restoration of Newcastle’s Castle Keep focussed on the South and West elevations where very severe erosion of the stone evidently was felt by others to justify extensive replacement with large areas of new masonry. The recently finished three year programme of consolidation to the East and North elevations with which we have been involved has been careful to avoid large scale renovation but concentrate on external repointing and replacement only where structural stability was affected or architectural detail had been lost. The Keep’s stone paved roof was also lifted and rebedded on a waterproof layer with sub-surface drainage
