Berwick Barracks Reawakening Project

We have completed a concentrated six week masterplanning feasibility study for Berwick Town Council and Berwick Archives and Museum Group to ascertain the possibilities for providing a Border’s Heritage Hub within the 18th century Grade I Listed Berwick Barracks. Over half of the buildings are currently vacant and other areas are underused. We have worked in close collaboration with key partners – English Heritage, The King’s Own Scottish Borderer’s, The Woodhorn Trust (Berwick Archives, Museum and Art Gallery), and Berwick Visual Arts. Jura Consultants have also worked alongside us producing a supportive credible Market Appraisal and Business Case.
An intense analysis of the implications of a proposed variety of interconnected uses for the whole site has been delivered to allow the key stakeholders to now further their ideas in a coherent way. The site abuts the Elizabethan Berwick Walls and Ramparts, a Scheduled Monument.
English Heritage in their Annual report have stated: “In Berwick, we’re working with local residents and partner organisations to see if Berwick Barracks can help kick-start the town centre’s regeneration. They told us the barracks should become a heritage hub for the region. We’re seeing if that is possible.”
