Masterplanning for new owner of Netherby Hall, Cumbria

Netherby Hall, Longtown, Cumbria

We were appointed by new owners to undertake masterplanning work for Netherby Hall Estate, Longtown, Cumbria – formerly the country seat of the Grahams from C16th to 1989. The main house is Grade II* with Grade II listed buildings alongside. A major investment in putting the fabric of the whole estate into good order is now underway. Since commencing our work we have:
• Received Listed Building Consent for refurbishment, repair and replacement where necessary, of all the windows in Netherby Hall itself (work has commenced);
• Been granted Listed Building consent and Planning Approval for reinstatement of the derelict stable buildings to house the owners’ horses and carriages, together with grooms’ living accommodation and a new dwelling with wheelchair access – this work will shortly start on site;
• At the same time consent was also granted for three large apartments in the North Wing of the house, including one which converts the Moot Hall – this work is almost ready for occupation;
• Submitted applications for four new dwellings and a new ecologically sensitive garden near the Walled Garden – this application has been approved.
• Commenced work for restoration of the Walled Garden to its former glory, including new glasshouses and putting the buildings outside the garden into good order.
We were invited by the owners to give a display of our current and future work at a public Open Day and Scarecrow Festival. Many local residents and previous workers on the Netherby Estate, who had not visited the house since 1989, were very supportive of the proposals.
